File Converters

File converters are designed to read information saved in one format, and write it out in another.  In many cases, file conversion can be done without any loss of information (e.g., converting a Word file to PDF); sometimes however, the target format cannot preserve everything the source format can (such as converting from jpeg to gif).  Losing information is often acceptable however, and is sometimes not even noticeable.  Another consideration is price.  Many products are free, while others have a free trial.  Most are downloadable.  When deciding what you need, shareware is often a viable option.  By the same token however, you get what you pay for, and paying several hundred dollars for a professionally developed tool may save you time and frustration that a lesser or cheaper tool cannot.  When looking for a long term or corporate level solution, consider spending some money.
